Alpro Soya – new Junior formula – with added sugar and less calcium!!!

We drink Alpro Soya in our house – the one that is fortified with calcium, vitamins B2, B12, D2 and E. It has apple extract in it which makes it more palatable for the children.

My husband recently picked up a new Alpro Soya Junior – specially formulated for children of over 1 to drink, so I looked at it with interest.

This was their description of it: “Alpro soya junior milk alternative has been nutritionally tailored as a main drink for children 1+ years onwards and can be introduced as part of a balanced diet from 6 months of age.”

Shockingly, compared to one above, I found:

  • The ADDITION of sugar
  • LESS calcium
  • Less vitamin E
  • Less vitamin B12

So, no thanks Alpro – I will NOT be giving that to my children.

Dairy allergy in children

My son is 5 1/2 and when he was little (months old) he started getting patches of eczema on his back. I used to rub evening primrose oil on to get rid of it, but never really knew at the time what caused it. When he went to nursery at 8 months old we started giving him cows milk formula – and he started getting a runny nose. We put this down to getting lots of colds from the nursery. Then he started getting really chesty to the point where he couldn’t properly sleep at night. I asked the nursery manager if he seemed more runny-nosed than normal and she confirmed this. So we stopped the formula and the symptoms disappeared. And gave it again – and they came back. He just couldn’t tolerate dairy products.

We had a difficult few years though it got easier, of avoiding all forms of dairy products. What is very difficult is visiting people and staying with family – dairy products are in so much food.

We tested him when he was about 3 and found out that he had an overgrowth of yeast and some not-so-good bacteria. These were giving him a lot of digestive problems. But also these bacteria and yeast create toxins in the gut which damage the lining of the gut and create a really common condition called ‘leaky gut’. I have researched this topic a lot.

Having a leaky gut is linked to food intolerances; partially digested food gets into the bloodstream and sets off a reaction.

Food intolerances actually underlie a lot of health conditions. I tested my son recently and he was positive for egg white (very common), cashews, and peas! Not what I was expecting. He is currently avoiding these foods and we are working on getting the environment right in his gut and then we will work on healing it.

Interestingly my son had blood tests and skin prick tests and always came back as negative for dairy, yet reacted as soon as had any dairy food. So shows you that tests are not conclusive. He can tolerate dairy now though which is wonderful though it is difficult ensuring he doesn’t eat egg especially when he goes to parties.

For my 13 month old daughter I gave her probiotics since birth, and omega 3 essential fats to encourage the immune system not to work inappropriately – ie resulting in food intolerances or allergies. I breastfed her until a month ago. However I didn’t avoid dairy when breastfeeding.

She has not had eczema and is a very very healthy child BUT we introduced goat-milk follow on formula for her and I am upset as she instantly reacted with a runny nose for the rest of the day after having it, which she doesn’t have on days when she doesn’t have it. And when I tried her with whole goats milk she also got a horrible red rash all over her cheek. So never again!

I am going to look into this to see what is the best way to ‘retrain’ her immune system, if it’s possible.

PMT – update

So, I have been taking ‘Agnus Castus Plus’ from the Natural Health Practice. It is a blend of 4 herbs which can help to balance hormones and regulate the menstrual cycle. In order to reduce the irritability part of my PMT I cut out coffee for the fortnight before I was due. I only ordered the herbs around this time so they have not had a chance to work yet but I definitely saw a slight reduction in the irritability – although my other half probably wouldn’t agree! I look forward to seeing how it is next month after taking the herbs for 6 weeks.

From having a baby ( a year ago now!) I had the happy situation of not having PMT and forgetting that I used to get it…Unfortunately this has returned.

PMS has been clustered into 4 main categories depending on symptoms:

PMS-A (Anxiety) – Anxiety, irritability, mood swings, nervous tension

PMS-B (Bloating) – Weight gain, abdominal bloating, breast tenderness, water retention

PMS-C (Craving) – Increased appetite, craving for sweets, fatigue, palpitations, headaches

PMS-D (Depression) – Depression, withdrawal, lethargy, forgetfulness, confusion, insomnia, acne

Well I definitely fall into category A – for this category women need to increase calcium and magnesium  levels (see below re calcium). Stress hormones need to be reduced, by relaxation, and by avoiding caffeine and sugar, and the herb agnus castus can be useful. SO, armed with this information – let’s see how I get on!

Emily Fawell in her final year thesis on the link between calcium intake and PMS surmised that PMS / PMT can actually be seen as indication of calcium deficiency..supplementing 1200mg calcium daily has been shown to reduce low mood, pain, fluid retention and food cravings associated with PMT.

Met up with a lovely lady called Caroline Henden yesterday for a walk in Ashridge woods. She is a reflexologist and passionate about what she does and it’s effect. I am excited as she is going to come and do a session for me. She is a mobile reflexologist, and I think she is superb value – she comes to clients and does a long session and is NOT expensive.

Reflexology is a superb way to relax and give the adrenal glands a break, switch off the sympathetic nervous system, and re-energise.

Can’t wait for my treatment!

Slimma Mamma up and running

So, the amazing new weight loss and exercise course called Slimma Mamma is now all ready to go.

It’s targeted just at mums – so it focuses on issues mums have – like fatigue, lack of time, stress, food cravings – not to mention jelly baby bellies and weak pelvic floor muscles.

It’s different from other weight loss classes as it’s actually an exercise class too – Christianne Wolff – celebrity personal trainer – will be running members through some challenging strengthening exercises in the class.

I’ll be giving great nutritional advice which will help to balance hormones, promote weight loss and increase energy levels.

We’ve decided to keep the group small, and run it as a course – Christianne runs boot camp and has massive success with weight loss over her 10 week courses. It’s going to take place in ‘Exclusively Ladies’ gym in Tring, Hertfordshire starting January 17th, Monday mornings from 1030-1130. There’s even a creche – it’s going to be amazing!! I can’t wait for it to start.

It affects health so potently.

I have just come back from a very productive meeting with a lovely lady who owns and manages a PR consultancy. We are planning to work together to come up with different ways that nutritional therapy can help in the workplace. One major area is stress and the impact it has on employees and therefore absenteeism and productivity at work. One idea is to run workshops that highlight the different types of stress and how to manage this nutritionally which is something I am pretty familiar with. All of my clients at the moment have some degree of adrenal fatigue, of which there are many many scientific papers written, yet for some reason the medical world does not accept that adrenal fatigue exists. It certainly exists in my clients, and stress and modern lifestyle are major contributory factors.

If any of you know anything about adrenal fatigue then you’ll have heard of Dr James Wilson, and his famous book “Adrenal Fatigue: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome” (brilliant) – well I attended a conference of his on Saturday in London, run by Nutri-Link (a fantastic company with very experienced and informative staff). I enjoyed this conference very much; reviewing the causes of adrenal fatigue, the far-reaching consequences that a lack of cortisol has, especially on the immune and digestive system, but ultimately every system in the body.

A few years ago I was getting so tired that I felt like I was cycling my short bike ride home through treacle. I had a lot of different sources of stress. I later did an Adrenal Stress Index test, which measures levels of saliva and DHEA (the “anti-aging” hormone) over a 24 hour period. My hormone levels were critically low, which impacted on my thyroid function and made me literally exhausted. It’s the adrenal glands that are literally exhausted. I’ve been taking one of Dr Wilson’s formulations called ‘Dynamite Adrenals’ which provides all of the nutrients that help the adrenal glands to replenish. I feel a lot better from taking this – way more energy, much less tired, and even if I have a bad night sleep I don’t feel terrible the next day. A stronger formulation is ‘Adrenal Rebuilder’ and I’m going to move onto this next. I’m recommending these to clients too with good results.

Key to recovering from adrenal fatigue is getting a good night’s sleep so on that note – good night!

Beta Glucans research

I was really excited to hear at the Food for the Brain conference in Oxford last week about the latest research into Beta Glucans.

These complex polysaccharides known as ?-1,3-d-glucans exert potent effects on the immune system — stimulating antitumour and antimicrobial activity, for example — by binding to receptors on macrophages and other white blood cells and activating them. Studies have been done recently using an injectable form of beta-glucans which has killed cancer tumours and even replaced them with healthy tissue. Excitingly there has been work showing great effects using the capsule form as well against infection and allergy.

Beta-glucans can affect the TH1 / TH2 ratio of the immune system which basically means it can switch the inappropriate response which causes allergies, off. To me this is really interesting and I am going to try this out on myself, to see if it affects my mould allergy.

I’ve been investigating appropriate venues here in Tring for the slimming group that I’m setting up with celebrity personal trainer Christianne Wolff. I’m really excited about this venture. It’s targeted specifically at mums and is all about changing the way you eat forever to lose weight and increase energy and vitality. It’s going to address issues that mothers have like stress, fatigue, sleep problems, anxiety, low mood; at the same time Christianne will be providing exercises targeted specifically at jelly bellys, pelvic floors etc. We will use motivational coaching and goal setting to help people achieve their goals.
We’re hoping to get it set up in the next couple of months during the day and maybe an evening class from January.
